Personal, Social and Emotional development is statutory to the curriculum and is taught using 'SCARF', a quality assured resource through the PSHE Association.

At Burgh by Sands School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) plays a vital role in supporting children’s personal development and wellbeing. PSHE is statutory and underpins our whole curriculum, as we recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, confident, resilient and valued.

We teach PSHE using SCARF, a high-quality, comprehensive programme produced by Coram Life Education - it is fully mapped to the PSHE Association's Programme of Study. SCARF supports children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing and includes all statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) requirements.

Our PSHE Curriculum

The SCARF curriculum is built around five core values:

  • Safety
  • Caring
  • Achievement
  • Resilience
  • Friendship

Through these themes, children are supported to develop essential life skills, positive relationships and a strong sense of self. Lessons encourage children to reflect, discuss, ask questions and build confidence in a supportive and respectful environment.

PSHE learning helps children to:

  • Develop confidence, resilience and positive self-esteem
  • Understand themselves and their emotions
  • Build healthy, respectful relationships
  • Make safe and informed choices
  • Develop curiosity, empathy and respect for others

We offer a wide range of activities that enhance children’s personal and social development and encourage them to achieve their best, regardless of background, circumstance or need.

Why we chose SCARF

We chose SCARF because:

  • The content is relevant, inclusive and sensitive to the needs of our pupils
  • The programme can be used flexibly, allowing teachers to respond to children’s questions and current issues
  • Lessons build upon prior learning and ensure clear progression across the school
  • Children are increasingly challenged in an age-appropriate way as they move through the school
  • SCARF has been developed by experienced PSHE specialists
  • Ongoing guidance and support is available for school staff
  • Preparing children for the future

Our intention is that children leave Burgh by Sands School with a strong awareness of themselves and others, equipped with the skills and attitudes they need for adult life. We aim to nurture lifelong learners who flourish as individuals, contribute positively to our community and act as responsible citizens in a diverse, global society.
